Everyone has tried the crash diet strategy at least one time in his or her life. If you're one of the lucky ones who hasn't, here's a quick summary of what happens:
You start out feeling totally confident and proud of yourself for taking the first step towards supposedly effective weight loss. Then you run out of energy, your blood sugar crashes, and you feel like a corpse. Usually at this point you end up binge eating a whole bunch of stuff that's more unhealthy than what you usually eat, just because you're so hungry.
Crash dieting and skipping meals is the least effective way to lose weight, for more than one reason. Not only is it totally ineffective for losing weight, but it makes you miserable the whole time you're doing it. Cue those Snickers commercials...
The reason why crash dieting doesn't work is that when you totally deprive your body of food, it goes into survival mode. So instead of burning off fat, it stores every tiny morsel of food that you put in your body, thereby doing the opposite of what you wanted. Instead of losing weight, you might end up gaining weight, which is like some weird punishment for not treating your body correctly.
But it gets even worse. If you are constantly skipping meals and "dieting" by depriving yourself, then you start to bloat and get constipated. Basically, the whole digestive system starts to get wonky when you try to mess with the process too much.
When you push yourself to the brink of being starving, you'll eat anything nearby once you finally give in to the hunger. This means you're much more likely to eat fast food or other forms of unhealthy food which will make you gain weight, rather than planning a healthy meal and indulging in small amounts.
The best and most healthy way to lose weight is by exhibiting portion control, eating healthy, natural food and exercising often. There's no short cut, and the more miserable you make yourself by not eating, the farther you'll be from your goal.
